Examining Rumors Surrounding Obtaining Luxembourgish Citizenship

Luxembourg - February 2, 2024

In recent weeks, questions have arisen in the SIMOURQ News segment regarding uncertainties surrounding the acquisition of Luxembourgish citizenship. In a recent inquiry with the Ministry of Justice's Nationality Services section, we sought clarification on two common and widespread questions in this regard:

First Question: If I have lived in the Netherlands for two years and Luxembourg for three years, given that both countries are members of the European Union and the Schengen Area, can I apply for Luxembourgish citizenship after five years of continuous residence in Europe?
Answer: No, according to the law enacted on March 8, 2017, Article 29. To apply for Luxembourgish citizenship using the integration option, the applicant must have been continuously registered in one of the municipalities of Luxembourg for 5 consecutive years. Therefore, residence in other European countries will have no impact on the application timeline.

Second Question: My spouse and I got married a year ago, and I have recently acquired Luxembourgish citizenship. Can we apply for Luxembourgish citizenship for my spouse using the marriage option after one year?
Answer: No, according to the law enacted on March 8, 2017, Article 25. To apply for Luxembourgish citizenship using the marriage option, the applicant must have passed three years from the legal date of marriage at the time of application. Additionally, they should be continuously registered in one of the municipalities of Luxembourg for one year.

It is important to note that for both citizenship application options, success is contingent upon passing the Luxembourgish language exam and completing integration classes. Living together in Luxembourg, as outlined in the "Vivre ensemble au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg" program, is also mandatory.
